File Under: Popular Culture

Anton Corbijn's Joy Division movie, Control, opens in New York today; for the occasion, the Lady BIB has an essay about pop-music biopics up at Slate. Which reminds us: When will Sabbra Cadabra (left) get their biopic? For that matter, when will Black Sabbath? (Supposedly there's a movie in the works for Mötley Crüe... but Christopher Walken as Ozzy Osbourne?!)

Bard of Sugar Puffs

Poster image from Joy Division Central (joydiv.org) Last night the Lady BIB caught a screening of Anton Corbijn's long-awaited Joy Division movie, Control, which she keeps wanting to call Closer (but that was the one with Natalie Portman as Ian Curtis -- that's why she had her hair so short for a while, etc). Anyway, the film provides a cameo for the Bard of Salford himself, John Cooper Clarke, who incidentally was once a spokesmodel for Sugar Puffs, a product that scrambled the minds of a generation of British schoolchildren via glycemic shock and assaultive promos like the one below. (Kate Winslet did a Sugar Puffs advert, too, but YouTube is not forthcoming.) NB: The Honey Monster's catchphrase was "Tell 'em about the honey, mummy." And here's Clarke doing the intro and the outro for Joy Division's "Transmission."
