From around 4am this morning outside the Brooklyn Library, Carnival celebrants took party in J'Ouvert. From the WIADCA guide to Carnival: "J'Ouvert, or jour ouvert in French, meaning daybreak, began in Trinidad in 1937. Today J'Ouvert is also celebrated in New York as a predawn festival on Carnival day."Labels: Brooklyn, Brooklyn Library, Grand Army Plaza, J'Ouvert, Labor day, Park Slope, West Indian Carnival

Labour Day marks the return of one of our favorite Brooklyn events: the West Indian American Day Carnival. The theme for this year is "Celebrate Culture, Embrace Diversity." The parade runs down Eastern Parkway; Mayor Bloomberg is to cut a ribbon at 11am at Utica Avenue to start the party.Labels: block party, Brooklyn, Eastern Parkway, Labor day, West Indian Carnival
