File Under: Popular Culture

Anton Corbijn's Joy Division movie, Control, opens in New York today; for the occasion, the Lady BIB has an essay about pop-music biopics up at Slate. Which reminds us: When will Sabbra Cadabra (left) get their biopic? For that matter, when will Black Sabbath? (Supposedly there's a movie in the works for Mötley Crüe... but Christopher Walken as Ozzy Osbourne?!)

From Dean Street to 'Wall Street'

The Newswalk Luxury Condo at 535 Dean Street reminds the BIB household of the faux-demolished aesthetic of interior designer Darien Taylor in Wall Street. Speaking of whom, the Lady BIB has an essay on Oliver Stone's '80s relic up at Slate. In other Lady BIB news, you can head over to the Boston Globe for her essay "The Advantages of Amnesia."

Dog Day Morning

The Lady BIB was recently researching an essay on Al Pacino -- it's up on Slate now -- that gave us the opportunity to watch Dog Day Afternoon for the 1,874th time (give or take). The utterly unassuming block where director Sidney Lumet shot the exteriors (including the immortal "Attica!" scene) is just a short bike ride from us, on Prospect Park West between 17th and 18th streets.

David Adjaye in Harlem

The Studio Museum in Harlem is hosting an exhibition of models, drawings and films of David Adjaye's architectural work. The Lady BIB wrote a Boston Globe piece last year about the Adjaye-designed Idea Store (above) in Whitechapel, London. David Adjaye: Making Public Buildings starts tomorrow and runs to October 28.

Fornication and Asphyxiation and Choking

The Brit in Brooklyn household is a bit nutty for Werner Herzog, and the Lady BIB writes about his new film, Rescue Dawn, in Slate. Here is part II of Herzog's great monologue from Les Blank's documentary Burden of Dreams.

Just Because

Dennis "Defender of the Night" Lim on everyone's favourite scarlet diva: "If there is a theme in Ms. Argento’s career, it’s that there’s more than one way to be naked." For those without TimesSelect, Dennis has more on Asia Argento's activities in the new issue of Cinema Scope, also featuring the Lady BIB on Knocked Up, Mark Peranson on Gus Van Sant, and the great Tom Charity on John Wayne.
